What is Phi Theta Kappa anyway?
Phi Theta Kappa is similar to (and based on) Phi Beta Kappa, the International Honors Society of teh traditional four-year Universities and Colleges. First known as Phi Kappa Omicron, the society was established almost a century ago (1910) at Stephens College, (a junior college for women), in Missouri. By 1929, Phi Theta Kappa had grown large and was recognized by the American Association of Junior Colleges as the Official Honors Society of the two-year Institutions. Today, Phi Theta Kappa has become the Official Honors Society of junior colleges not only in America, but throughout the world as well; that is why Phi Theta Kappa is the Official International Honors Society of the two-year colleges.
But...what's so important about Phi Theta Kappa?
Phi Theta Kappa is not about Intellectual Excellence only; many rely on our help. Phi Theta Kappans volunteer their time to aid organizations in need. Just recently our chapter (Alpha Epsilon Phi) helped clean a portion of the beaches of Sandy Hook, and did so with the help of other chapters in New Jersey. The list of beneficiaries go on! We have helped numerous times the American Cancer Society by participating in the Relay For Life, helped local shelters in need of donations, aided Gildas Club in their endeavors, served as chefs for senior citizens, helped beautify America through means of cleaning and recycling, etc. Four-year colleges love Phi Theta Kappans because we strive for excellence in all aspects of life. You can too!
